Every Student, a
Responsible Student
Thanks to those students and parents who attended our Family Reading, Food, and Fun night on January 20th. The minutes that we read jumpstarted our Jazz Reading minutes competition and gave everyone a chance to listen to stories read by parents and staff members. Keep your eyes open for the next Title One Parent Night!
Provo School District is now offering parenting classes. Click here for the latest flyer in English and here for one in Spanish.

Provost Elementary School, with 437 students, read a combined total of 1,010,119 minutes starting from the first day of school, August 19, 2009 to December 18, 2009, equaling an average of 2,311.5 minutes read per student and about an average of 19 minutes of reading every single day per student. Provost Elementary has worked successfully to instill a strong tradition and love of reading and literacy within each student attending. By providing multiple incentives for reaching reading goals, Provost has been able encourage many different types of students to not only increase their personal reading time, but add to reading time with their family as well.
"We really wanted to make reading a life-long tradition for our students," said Stephany Ricci, Provost Elementary School’s Facilitator. "We also wanted to strive hard for parent involvement in literacy too."
Provost Elementary provides extra resources to improve student achievement in all other areas in addition to reading, including assistance to all students seeking help with homework before and after school. Please call Provost Elementary School at 801-374-4960 for details on the many exceptional programs offered to students there
The Utah State Office of Education chose Provost Elementary in Provo School District as a Title 1 High Performing School for 2008 – 2009. That means this elementary school has achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) under the No Child Left Behind Act in both Language Arts and Mathematics for the past two consecutive years, reached or exceeded the Utah state average in Language Arts and Mathematics on the most recent Criterion Reference Tests, and was nominated by Superintendent Randy Merrill as a high performing school.
"This is not an easy accomplishment for Title 1 Schools," said Barbara Graves, Provo School District’s Title 1 Coordinator. "The entire district appreciates and recognizes Principal Oliverson and his wonderful staff who worked so hard to help Provost’s students perform at these amazing levels."

Barrett and Gabrielle, two 5th graders from Provost, competed in the BYU Dancesport competition held at the BYU Wilkinson Center on November 13-14. They competed in the Cha-cha competition and went up against about 70 other couples, some of which were middle school students. They went through 3 rounds before they were cut during the semi-final round. Even though they learned a cha-cha routine during Ballroom class, they improvised so that the judges would not know exactly what to expect.
Barrett and Gabi learned how to dance during the Ballroom dance classes offered as part of Provost's afterschool program. Barrett has been learning Ballroom dance for about 3 years, starting before the minimum grade because his older brother was already in it and they needed boys. This is Gabi's first year in learning ballroom dance and she was very nervous in front of the judges during the competition. She said that it is not really difficult to dance with someone who is shorter then her.

Provost Elementary School celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in September with its popular annual Family Fiesta. There was plenty of good food, music and dancing, piñatas and valuable information available for parents. The salsa cook off competition was a success with lots of yummy family recipes for all to try. Congratulations goes out to Mr. Brace, one of our fifth grade teachers who took the grand champion prize for the best salsa! This celebration also served as the kick off for a new year of before and after school programs and our annual Title 1 meeting. We look forward to celebrating again next year with all of our families that represent many cultures from around the world. The Provost community is proud of the diversity that we share!
