In September 2004, 5th grade students at Provost expressed great concern for the individuals hit by hurricanes in Florida. The question arose quickly; “How can we help?” The result of their quest was a trip to the LDS Humanitarian Center in Salt Lake City.
On October 14th, the students in Mrs. Lemmon and Miss Wall’s classes toured the center and learned of its many resources. Students were surprised to see how many people around the world were helped by services provided by the humanitarian center.
The most exciting event of that day was when the students were able to volunteer and make hygiene kits. They were assembled in lines and put hand towels, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes into plastic bags. When the 2 hours of service were complete, the students had assembled 1,440 kits!
This experience created the desire for service with each student. After the devastating tsunami in SE Asia, students again began asking what they could do to help.
Provost students began a campaign “Change the World.” Each student has been asked to donate what he or she can in change. This money is being sent to the tsunami victims.
For some of Miss Wall’s students, this was not enough. Knowing that the cost of transporting goods to Asia was not the best option, as well as knowing the value of service, they put some ideas together – serving others can generate needed funds.
They now have a committee of students, led by parent volunteers, who are planning another project. On January 21st, students and other volunteers will be making hygiene, school and newborn kits at the LDS Humanitarian Center. Business and members of the community have been asked to pledge whatever they can per kit produced.
All proceeds from the pledge drive will be donated to the children’s charity Save the Children to fund victims of the tsunami. The humanitarian kits will be dispersed where they are needed in the United States or elsewhere in the world.
If you would like to pledge, please contact Michelle Wall.
